The first of many symptoms of bad gas caps is probably a loose gas cap or a gas cap that will not completely tighten. This might not seem important at first, but without an air-tight seal, the entire fuel system can be exposed to grime and dirt. If your gas cap is not sealing properly, try checking the rubber seal to make sure it isn’t missing or brittle. If you have an older vehicle, make sure the metal gas cap is not bent or damaged. Both can lead to the gas cap problems and may even require buying a replacement from the manufacturer.
What concerns can an ill-fitting gas cap cause, well a check engine light? A non-secure gas cap will not only let in grime and dirt, but it can also allow fuel vapors to escape. These vapors can trigger an error in the emissions system, which could cause the check engine light to illuminate. Grime that gets into the gas tank could also damage injectors. Perhaps the biggest sign of a bad gas cap is the smell of gasoline in your car.
If your car, truck, or SUV wasn’t built with a capless fuel tank, it’s not recommended that you drive without a gas cap installed. If your car or truck is older, there’s a chance that gasoline could slosh out from the tank during aggressive cornering or other enthusiastic driving. If you drive your car without a gas cap, it can lead to poor fuel efficiency because the gasoline may evaporate without the correct seal on the fuel filler. The gasoline smell is the fuel evaporating from the tank, which can cause reduced fuel efficiency.
If you have inspected the gas cap, the problems you’re having might be due to bad gasoline. If the car has difficulty starting, won’t accelerate, or just is not running correctly, then you might just have contaminated gas.
